My pokemon team always had a Kadabra, I never had anyone nearby to trade with so I rarely had an Alakazam, but I vividly remember walking back and fourth in the grass for ages trying to get an Abra to try and catch before it teleported away. It was a pain but that made it all the sweeter when you caught one.
